Our May 2021 Book Club Read - When You Believe: The First Princess with No Hair by Brandi Hall5/25/2021
 You guys know I enjoy short reads, and A Purpose Driven Woman by Felicia Shakespeare is a book that inspires, encourages, motivates, gives hope, and it will light a fire within your soul.
As I began reading this book, I could not put it down. I began to see myself, my family, and my friends within the lives of the 14 women who helped co-author this book. This manuscript is so relatable, heartfelt, and genuine, so much so that I began to hear myself speaking. And you ask, how is this? Well, in my very humble opinion, it is because purpose-driven women think alike, move alike, and dream alike. The thought, move, and plan may not be the same. Still, if you are a woman who has decided to begin taking steps to live your purpose, you will start to see a reflection of yourself in a mirror through the eyes of these lovely ladies who are doing precisely what you want to do. You learn a lesson from every story within this literary work. The section titled A Path to Purpose by Felicia Shakespeare reminds us that when motion, movement, and meaning collide, we start to see our purpose. The section titled Daydream in Color and Pursue Greatness by Charisma Smith reminds us that your attitude determines your altitude. And the section titled My Journey to Becoming Soul Satisfied by Joyce Dawkins reminds us that there is no permission required to be who you desire to be in life. So, if you're ready to transform your life and reach your goals, A Purpose Driven Woman will set you on the course to finally living out your calling.  I enjoy short reads, and True Friendship with Girlfriends by Licia Johnson is a short fiction read about two friends, Kendra and Aubrie, who share a friendship. The story displays how their friendship played out in connection with the other relationships they had outside of their friendship with each other. The book also highlights relationships with women in general and how jealousy and envy, waisted emotions, can tarnish and be unhealthy in relationships amongst women friends.
This short read encouraged me to reflect on the relationships I have with the people I call my friends. It made me truly reflect on whether those friendships are genuine, healthy, balanced, and if I am contributing to the friendship. This story is relatable as I have seen some of the scenarios within this story play out in my life, and it has and is disappointing when you take a step back and look in the mirror, or look at that friend, and you can feel that the connection is not real. Anyone who knows me and has read my books knows that valuing relationships is vital to me, but it is something that I have not done so well in the past due to my responsibilities and having my views of being the only child. Aside from the book's content, I was impressed by the smooth transition the author took to introduce me to the new characters in her story. Please comment and share your thoughts on the book. PARTING THOUGHTS True Friendship with Girlfriends by Licia Johnson made me think of friendships and relationships with other significant people in my life; my dad, husband, cousins, aunties, uncles, to name a few. If you cherish a relationship, you fight for it, but you need to decide to live in your peace, be happy, or continue to force a piece in your puzzle that does not fit. At the end of this story, did Kendra and Aubrie make it? I know the answer, and if you read the book, you will too. |
